On the evening of July 28, 1997, a rapid succession of thunderstorms dropped 9 to 11 inches of rain on the City of Fort Collins, Colorado. The resulting flooding took five lives and caused extensive property damage. To avoid such problems in the future, the City acted decisively, adding and upgrading components of a local flood warning system. The system includes ALERT rainfall and streamflow gages, plus data management and display software. Together these provide the city with real-time information about hydrological conditions in local watersheds and streams.
