The Lavaca-Navidad River Authority (LNRA) operates Lake Texana for water supply, but flood runoff into the lake must also be controlled. The operation goal in this case is to end each flood event with a full pool for water supply, without causing damage at the dam site or downstream. This requires the operator to make release decisions that anticipate future inflow.

To help the operator make decisions about releases, we developed a model of Lake Texana. This model has a custom interface, as shown below, that was designed with cooperation of the LNRA operators. The forecast is fed to the lake model in real time. With this, the operator can try various gate settings, see graphically the impact of those, and select the best settings.
