To reduce the City's vulnerability to future floods, the City installed an extensive ALERT data collection system to monitor rainfall and stage in real-time. But the flashy nature of floods in Fort Collins means that warning based upon observations alone may be too late.</div> </tD> </tR> <tR> <tD VALIGN=TOP COLSPAN=3 BGCOLOR=#339933 HEIGHT= 16 WIDTH="537"><div> <B>Action</B></div> </tD> </tR> <tR> <tD VALIGN=TOP COLSPAN=3 HEIGHT= 148 WIDTH="537"><div> We developed a real-time flood inundation mapping system (RTFIM) that integrates (a) watershed models (SWMM) and channel models (HEC-2 and HEC-RAS) developed for drainage studies in Fort Collins; (b) real-time data collected by the City's ALERT system; (c) topographic data in GIS format; and (d) aerial photographs and other GIS coverages that show vulnerable property and people. The result is a system capable of forecasting future stage and generating and displaying maps of potentially inundated areas. The image below is an example. This permits emergency managers to respond quickly to flood threats.
