We wrote the technical reference manual for HEC-HMS. In the manual, we describe the models that are included in HEC-HMS, we provide information about estimating parameters for the models, and we give advice regarding how and when to use the models. We include examples of the computations for the new or uncommon models that are included in HEC-HMS. Our presentation of the models is aimed at an engineer or scientist who has studied hydrology in a university-level course.
We include also information about calibrating the models included in HEC-HMS, with details of using the automatic calibration feature. With this feature, the program user provides observed boundary conditions and system response, and the software adjusts various model parameters to fit the model to this response.
We also developed for HEC an applications guide for HEC-HMS. This document illustrates application of HEC-HMS to (1) urban flooding studies; (2) flood-frequency studies; (3) flood-loss reduction studies; (4) flood-warning system planning studies; (5) reservoir design studies; (6) environmental studies; and (7) water management studies. For each study category, the guide identifies common objectives of the study and the authorities under which the study would be undertaken by a Corps office. It then identifies the hydrologic engineering information that is required for decision-making, and describes the appropriate models that are available in HEC-HMS for developing the information. The guide presents, in detail, an example study in each category.
